Artist + Maker Submissions
Artist + Maker Submissions
We love discovering independent artists, makers, and small creative businesses and we’re grateful that so many people think of Art Cloth & Craft as a place they would like to see their work.
Because we receive inquiries regularly, we’ve created a simple submission process that allows us to thoughtfully review each collection while also giving our customers and current artists the attention they deserve.
Interested in having your work at Art Cloth & Craft?
All new artist and maker inquiries should begin by email. Please do not bring work into the shop for review without a scheduled appointment.
Please email your submission to themakers@artclothandcraft.com with the subject line:
ARTIST SUBMISSION – Your Name or Business Name
Your email should include:
- A brief introduction about you and your work
- Several clear photos or a link to your website, portfolio, or social media
- Approximate retail pricing
- Where your work is currently sold, if applicable
- Any additional information you think would be helpful for us to know
Email submissions are important to us for a few reasons. Our days in the shop are centered around helping customers and running the business, and we are not always able to give an artist an unexpected visit the time and attention their work deserves.
It also allows us to keep your information on file. Sometimes we genuinely love someone’s work, but it may not be the right fit for the shop at that particular moment or season. Having your original submission available by email allows us to easily revisit your work when we are planning a future assortment, event, season, or opening within a particular category.
Please do not bring or leave work at the shop unless an appointment has been arranged in advance.
How Our Consignment Works
For most consigned work, Art Cloth & Craft retains 40% of the final retail selling price, with 60% paid to the artist or maker.
We understand that someone new to consignment may initially wonder why a shop receives 40% of a sale. A retail partnership involves much more than providing shelf or wall space.
Our commission helps cover the many costs and services involved in successfully presenting and selling your work, including:
- Prime retail floor, wall, and display space
- Merchandising and display
- Customer service and sales
- Credit card and payment processing fees
- Shopping bags, tissue, wrapping, boxes, and other packaging
- Photography and product presentation when applicable
- Website, email, and social media marketing
- Advertising and promotional events
- Point-of-sale and inventory systems
- Staffing and day-to-day handling of the work
- Rent, utilities, insurance, and the overhead required to operate a brick-and-mortar retail space
- The established customer base and foot traffic we have spent years building
Most importantly, when we bring something into Art Cloth & Craft, we are not simply giving it a place to sit - we are retailing it.
We merchandise it alongside the rest of the shop, talk with customers about the work, tell the artist’s story, wrap purchases, process transactions, promote the store, and create an environment designed to help the right customer discover it.
For that reason, work submitted for consignment needs to be priced in a way that allows for a 40% retail commission.
As an example, if an item retails for $50, the artist receives $30 and Art Cloth & Craft retains $20.
If your current pricing does not allow for a retail commission, we completely understand, but consignment with a brick-and-mortar retailer may not be the best fit for that particular product.
What We Look For
We curate the shop carefully and consider the entire mix when selecting new work. We look at things such as originality, quality, craftsmanship, pricing, presentation, seasonality, available space, and how a collection complements what we already carry.
Because our assortment changes throughout the year, a “not right now” does not necessarily mean “not ever.”
We may love a collection but feel that it makes more sense for a future season, holiday, event, or opening in a particular category. This is another reason we strongly prefer initial submissions by email - we can keep great work accessible and revisit it when the timing is right.
Please also understand that submitting work does not guarantee acceptance, and we are unable to carry every wonderful thing that is presented to us.
If We Think It May Be a Fit
If we would like to see the work in person or discuss the collection further, we will contact you to schedule a time. (Also, please be patient with us. It is just us 2 sisters here and we operate at full capacity doing all of things :)
Appointments allow us to give you our full attention, look at the work thoughtfully, discuss pricing and merchandising, and make decisions without trying to do so while simultaneously assisting customers.
We truly value the artists and makers whose work helps make Art Cloth & Craft what it is, and we want the process of bringing new work into the shop to feel thoughtful, organized, and mutually beneficial.
Thank you for thinking of Art Cloth & Craft as a home for your work. We look forward to seeing what you create.
